Honouring a Pioneer of Composite Materials

Honorary Plenary - "A Revolutionary Laminate Theory: Simplified Design, Testing and Manufacturing" from Prof. Tsai

Conferences

ECCM22

June 17, 2026

ECCM22 is proud to welcome one of the most influential figures in the history of composite materials as an "Honorary Plenary Speaker": Prof. Stephen Tsai, from Stanford University!

For more than six decades, Prof. Tsai has helped shape the foundations of modern composite materials engineering. His contributions have transformed the way researchers and engineers design, analyse, test, and manufacture composite structures worldwide. His name is synonymous with concepts that have become fundamental to the field, including: Tsai failure criteria, Lamination parameters, etc. and importantly, the Double-Double laminate technology!

Prof. Tsai began working on composite materials in 1961 and continues to advance the field today. His remarkable career spans positions at Yale University, Ford Motor Company, the US Air Force Materials Laboratory, Washington University, and Stanford University. His achievements have been recognised internationally, including election to the US National Academy of Engineering and, most recently, the prestigious Guggenheim Medal (2025).

At ECCM22, Prof. Tsai will present his latest vision for composite structures through the concept of Double-Double laminates, a revolutionary approach that challenges conventional laminate design philosophies and offers new possibilities for simplified design, testing, manufacturing, scaling, tapering, and multifunctional composite structures.

This plenary is more than a technical presentation - it is an opportunity to hear directly from one of the architects of modern composite materials science whose ideas continue to influence generations of researchers and engineers around the world.

We are deeply honoured to welcome Prof. Stephen W. Tsai to Oslo!
